Ephesians 6:18 – And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
This verse comes after Paul has instructed us on putting on our spiritual armor. It is not a piece of armor, but it is equally as important in fighting spiritual warfare. Through prayer we have a direct line to God and His power. Anyone engaging in spiritual battle is going to want to tap into the power of God if we expect to win.
We begin with the directive to pray in the Spirit. We should be praying in harmony with God. The Spirit within us is already interceding on our behalf (Romans 8:27), but we should be doing our part, too.
It also says on all occasions, which is a lot of opportunity to pray. Every opportunity we have, we should take to enter into prayer.
After that we are instructed to employ all sorts of prayers and requests. Some different types include adoration, praise, supplication, intercession, petition, and thanksgiving. While all are prayers, they are each different from the others.
Following that we are told to stay alert and to always be praying. This is also mentioned in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 where we are told to pray without ceasing. This is not necessarily literal, but it is a reminder to be praying often.
And we conclude by praying for others. Not only do we need to be in prayer during spiritual battles, but we are to pray for other people, not just ourselves.
How often do you pray? Take some time today to track how often you are praying or try out a different type of prayer. But regardless of what you do or when, pray.
