Devotion: Ezekiel 36:26

Aug 7, 2025

Ezekiel 36:26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.

In today’s verse we are being taken back to a time when the Israelites were once again in need of redemption and restoration, both spiritually and physically. We need to understand that the verse is speaking about renewal for the nation of Israel. But don’t think that means there is no spiritual application we can take from it.

God promised them transformation. He said He will give them a new heart and a new spirit. We know from Jeremiah 17:9 that the heart is deceitful and wicked. But God has promised to give them a new heart. Their hardened, unrepentant hearts would be changed, transformed, made new. And He would put a new spirit in them – the Holy Spirit.

He did it then and He is doing it now. He will take your heart of stone, rebellious and wicked, and He will give you a new heart, one that will be receptive to His will and His ways. The Spirit will fill you and be with you always, forgiven, renewed, and transformed.

Gods did not call us to be perfect, to live like obedient clones. He doesn’t want us to be rebellious and live unholy lives. Instead, He has called us to be something new, to be a temple for the Spirit He was giving us. Our hearts had to be purified, cleansed, and transformed before we would receive His Spirit.

How is your heart? Are you still living life with a hardened heart that gratifies itself and indulges in rebellious acts? Or do you have a new heart, one that is clean and filled with the Spirit? Remember, He has already given you a new heart and Spirit. Your heart has been made new, softened to His will, receptive to His ways, and it beats harmoniously with His.
