Devotion: Ezra 7:27-28

March 10, 2025

Ezra 7:27-28 Praise be to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, who has put it into the king’s heart to bring honor to the house of the Lord in Jerusalem in this way.

Today’s verse may seem out of place among the various verses we have covered so far. But we need to remember that it is God who does everything for us, who blesses us, who makes a way for us, who commissions us to do His work. It is God who is to be praised and it takes bold faith to sing those praises and to obey.

Ezra gives us a beautiful example of how we should respond to the Lord when something good happens. He did not try to take credit for being able to restore worship in Jerusalem. He didn’t ignore things or assume it was just a normal day. He didn’t run from his role of restoration. He responded in praise. He gave credit where due. He boldly praised the Lord and it is this response that WE should have for all of the events in our lives.

We also see in this verse an instance of God commissioning someone. He, the God of our ancestors, put it into the king’s heart. The king didn’t decide on his own. He didn’t respond out of pressure from the people. He didn’t wake up one day and suddenly decide the Israelites could resume their worship. He was commissioned by God to allow this. It was put into his heart. God did it. God made it happen. And Ezra recognized this. He recognized the hand of God and he gave praise where praise was due.

What has God put in your heart? We all have our own commission from God. He has put something in your heart that He wants you to do. How are you responding? Are you running from what He wants from you? Or are you responding with praise?

Praise to the Lord, for it He who inspires us and puts it into us to do His will. Step out boldly in faith and praise His glorious Name and do what He has called you to do.
