Devotion: Galatians 5:16

Aug 11, 2025

Galatians 5:16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

What does Paul mean when he tells us to “Walk by the Spirit?” It is a phrase we have probably read time and time again but have you ever stopped to think about exactly what it means? Today we are going to focus on that and see exactly what it means in our lives.

When we walk by the Spirit we are living a life that is guided by the Spirit, not a life that is lived by the flesh or the world. We actively choose to follow the guidance of the Spirit, being aware of the leading and guidance of the Spirit in our lives. But we have to be listening to what the Spirit is telling us. We have to be seeking His ways, not our own. We choose to act in ways that are godly and holy, not things that the world does.

Walking by the Spirit is not a one day, one time action. It is a continuous, ongoing choice we make to follow the Spirit. We allow the Spirit to guide our steps and transform our lives. We are empowered by the Spirit to live in a manner that is righteous and holy. We take off our old self and we put on the new.

Paul goes on to tell us that when we walk by the Spirit we will not gratify the desires of the flesh. When we are walking in accordance with God’s will for us, we are able to stand firm against whatever the enemy throws at us. We are able to take a stand against the war within us that wants to indulge in worldly, fleshly actions.

Stand firm, friends. The Spirit is with you. The Spirit is guiding your steps, gently urging you forward. Walk with the Spirit and take a stand against the desires of the flesh that the enemy is trying to use to distract you. We are victorious. We are conquerors. The battle has already been won, so walk confidently in your life knowing that the Spirit is with you.
