Devotion: Galatians 5:6

June 7, 2025

Galatians 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

When we read verses like this, we can sometimes get lost in the religious requirements of a time when such actions were more relevant and it is hard for modern day Christians to relate. But there is still a lesson in such words and that is our focus for today’s selection.

While we may not be required to circumcise ourselves today, we can see that the topic was one of contention for the early church. There was one group who felt circumcision was absolutely necessary for salvation, while others argued that it was not. And it caused quite the division between the two groups.

But Paul pointed out that neither side mattered. Neither had value because it was not what the focus should be. Rather, it was our faith that mattered. We know that we are saved by grace through faith, not by anything we do on our own (Ephesians 2:8-9) and that was what Paul wanted the Galatians to understand. It is faith that is important and the life we live based upon that faith that holds all of the value.

And with faith, we have love. Love naturally flows from within us when Christ is the center of our lives, the ruler of our hearts.

Don’t get caught up in “doing” things. Religious accomplishments are empty works when compared to genuine faith. Instead, seek Him and live a life of faith, letting love freely flow from within you to a world that needs Him. Know that God accepts you because He sees Christ in you. When He looks at you, He sees His Son who He loves and accepts. You don’t need to do anything but have faith and follow Jesus.
