Devotion: Habakkuk 3:18

January 13, 2025

Habakkuk 3:18 Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.

Today we venture into Habakkuk, which is not a book we spend a lot of time in. But today let’s spend a few minutes looking at what it has to say to us. It is not a long book, so take a moment to read through the three chapters and get a sense for what the book is about.

Chapter three is meant to be sung, though the notes in most bibles label it as Habakkuk’s prayer. The final verse tells us it is music, and you can see the lyrical prose laid out in his writing. He recounts all that God has done and His majesty and power, including the things that were not so pleasant (the trees and vines don’t produce, the fields and stalls are empty of animals, etc.), he said “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be joyful…”

Even when we face despair and disappointment, even then our hearts should be rejoicing and full of joy because God is in control. God has a plan and He will see us through the rough patches in our lives. We know that everything we experience here on Earth is temporary. We have a future awaiting us in heaven that will last for eternity. But even while here on earth, the despair is temporary. God is there, always. He is waiting for us to cry out to Him so that He can bless us and lift us up, to fill us with joy. He is our salvation.

If you are going through a dark time currently, if you are struggling to make ends meet, if you are in a season of waiting on Him, remember the words of Habakkuk. I will REJOICE in the Lord, I will be JOYFUL in God my Savior. He is in control and has a plan. Trust Him.
