Hebrews 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe…
Today’s verse begins with therefore, which means we need to read back a little before diving in. We see that the author is comparing the Old Testament giving of the covenant at Mount Sinai with the future covenant we will have in heaven. Understanding the Mount Sinai event helps us better understand what is being said in verse 28. (You can read about it in Exodus 19:9-20.) The event was literally ground shaking – an earthquake.
But our future is clear. We have full confidence that we will receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken or destroyed. His kingdom will last forever and it will be beyond anything we can imagine or hope for (Revelation 21:1). The world we know now will be shaken one final time (Isaiah 13:13, Revelation 6:12-17), ushering in the Kingdom of God, which will stand strong and victorious forever and ever.
Let us be thankful… So far this month we have seen over and over the fact that we should have gratitude and should praise God for the things we have and will receive. We have been reminded that it is not by the works of our hands that we have been saved, but rather by the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf. And now we see that we will receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken…
So let us be thankful. Let us praise His holy name for all He has given us, thanking Him for His sacrifice in our place, with reverence and awe… because we know that our God is a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29). Our gratitude, our praise , and our worship should not be given here and there. It should be constant, a lifestyle response, not a once or twice event we engage in. And it should be filled with reverence and awe.
Are you giving Him the praise He deserves? Let’s be sure our worship is done from our hearts. We should be praising Him with deep, heartfelt respect and awe.
