Hebrews 2:12 He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.”
This verse is a direct quote of Psalm 22:22. The Psalm is often considered to be a Messianic foreshadowing of Christ’s suffering and victory. We covered Psalm 22:22 earlier in the month, so you can refer back to that day for a recap if you don’t recall the verse.
Though we covered the psalm from which today’s verse is quoted, there is still insight we can draw and new things we can learn. We know the book of Hebrews covers much of Christ’s suffering and the sacrifice He made to give us life and make us His brethren. It is to this brethren that He proclaims the name of God the Father. He proclaims to God that we are His brothers and sisters, that we are holy and sanctified. We are made whole, worthy to be called children of God thanks to the work Jesus did on the cross.
It is His sacrifice, His suffering, His death and resurrection that we sing praises for. He sings praises to God and our voices join with the heavenly chorus to sing praise to the Lord. We don’t typically think of Him as singing praise. Rather we think of Him as receiving the praise we bring. But He is an active participant in the praise bringing, another Voice to sing praise before the entire assembly, before all of heaven.
This verse connects Old Testament with New. It affirms the Messianic prophecy and the truth it proclaimed. It shows us not only the suffering of our Lord (you have to read the context, not just the single verse), but His active participation in the worship in heaven. We see Him modeling to us how worship should be and we join in that worship to sing praises to our God.
