Hebrews 2:14-15 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death – that is, the devil – and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
We learned a few days ago that people used to live in fear of judgement and condemnation under the Law. Today we revisit that concept and explore it further as we return to the basics of the gospel and what Jesus did to set us free.
We are human, made of flesh and blood, and have unfortunately inherited a sinful nature thanks to the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. But God loves us so much that He made a way for us to be redeemed and restored. Death will not separate us from Him when we die because we were freed of the slavery that held us.
His solution was to send His Son, Jesus, to be the sacrifice that was necessary for atonement. Because we are flesh and blood, Jesus, too, became flesh and blood and dwelled among humanity. He became God in human form – He experienced love, grief, exhaustion, and everything else we go through. And He gave His life in our place. He became the sacrifice needed to cleanse us of sin and unrighteousness.
But death was not the end! His death broke the hold the enemy had – eternal separation – and freed us from slavery that held us captive. Fear of physical and spiritual death no longer has a hold on us. Jesus took the keys and set us free. He destroyed the devil’s power over death and delivered humanity from darkness. Jesus died in our place, nullifying the power the devil had and filling us with hope for the future.
Trust that death has no hold on your life. You are free through your faith in Jesus. We will still experience physical death, but as believers we can be confident in eternal life with God in heaven. Because of this assurance, your life now does not need to be lived in fear of what happens upon dying. Death has no power over you any more.
