Hebrews 4:16 – Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
As with any Scripture, context matters, so let’s begin by reviewing context.
We see that God’s Word is the measurement tool used in judging our thoughts, actions, and behaviors (Hebrews 4:1-12). Nothing is hidden from God (Hebrews 4:13). And verses fourteen and fifteenremind us that Christ was human and can relate. He faced many of the things we face, but He did not give in to sin (Hebrews 2:18). He remained pure and righteous.
Then we arrive at today’s verse. We can have confidence in approaching God because we have the Spirit within us. Jesus fully understands what we are going through because He, too, experienced struggles of the world. Because of this, we can be confident in approaching God.
And with that confidence, we receive mercy (not getting the punishment we deserve) and grace (an undeserved gift) that helps us when we need it. Grace is so abundant and overflowing that the author of Hebrews called it the throne of grace.
All it takes for us to receive this abundant, overflowing grace is us seeking Him. We must approach Him in prayer so that we may be granted mercy and grace. We can then draw upon that grace and mercy later as needs arise.
Are you confident in your prayers? Know that you can have complete confidence in coming before God in prayer. Step out of the doubts holding you back and weighing you down, and step into the gifts of grace and mercy.
