Devotion: Hebrews 5:11

June 21, 2025

Hebrews 5:11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make clear to you because you no longer try to understand.

I pray that I never get to the point that the recipients of this letter were at where they no longer tried to understand. How frustrating for those who are trying to teach and lead them. And how disappointing, too. I cannot imagine those I work with and disciple becoming stagnant and refusing to try to understand things.

You can imagine how frustrating it must have been for the author of Hebrews. The Greek word used to describe their attitude was nothroi, and the interpretation of the word is laziness, sluggishness and a general lack of eagerness to learn and grow.

At this point in their walk, the author was hoping to see the believers further in their faith and spiritual development. They should have been teaching others, but instead they still needed basic instruction themselves. They were spiritually immature and worse, they were lazy about learning and growing.

What about you? How is your walk going? Are you becoming stagnant in your spiritual development? Or do you still have a passion for learning and growing? This verse serves as a warning to us as believers. A lack of spiritual growth can lead to falling away from the faith. When we grow lazy and don’t bother trying to understand and learn more, we risk damaging our walk and neglecting our faith. We do not live a life worthy of Jesus at that point, which is contrary to everything we have learned so far this month. Our lives should be glorifying Him and we need to be pushing ourselves daily to learn more, grow more, and become the living sacrifices He wants us to be.

Today is the perfect time to rededicate yourself to your faith and the Lord. Tell Him once again that you need Him and only Him. Ask for forgiveness and let Him cleanse you once more. And then learn! Dig deep into the Scriptures and let the Spirit reveal new and exciting truths to you. Whatever you do, do not neglect your spiritual development. Push to continue growing, to learn more every day. And let Him be the center of your life.
