Devotion: Hosea 11:4

Dec 14,, 2025

Hosea 11:4 I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them.

This verse speaks such joy and encouragement to me and I pray it blesses you as well. It is a reminder of the love God has for each of us. Everything He does is out of love and kindness and it is done without force or coercion.

In this verse we see imagery that suggests He guides us with gentle leading strings or cords, like a parent guides a toddler who is learning to walk, or a farmer uses kind ropes, not harsh chains, to guide animals. It demonstrates to us just how amazing and wonderful God’s affectionate, supportive guidance is in our lives rather than being forceful or controlling. We all have free will and we are allowed to exercise it while relying on God to guide us in His kindness.

Like little children He leads us and loves us. He lifts us to His cheek and comforts us throughout our journey. God’s leadership is like a parent, and it is intimate and hands-on, not distant, as He personally takes  us and guides, liberates, and nourishes us as a parent would do with their own children.

We see that God is involved in our lives, not hiding His face from us in anger for a time (Isaiah 54:8). We experience guidance that is persistent, merciful, and shows gentle love for His unfaithful people, acting as a loving father. We may be unfaithful and undeserving, but like any parent, He sees our potential, He sees beyond the negatives, and He loves us regardless of all of this.

It contrasts with the harshness that is often seen in earthly relationships and highlights God’s willingness to forgive, to restore, and to care for those who have wronged Him. His kindness is overflowing and covers us as we move through our days. His love is eternal and ever present, something we should praise Him for every day.

Let Him guide you with gentle cords of kindness and love. Experience His love and forgiveness in your life and thank Him for the blessings He gives you each day.
