Devotion: Isaiah 41:13

July 21, 2024

Isaiah 41:13 For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

Do you remember your parents taking hold of your hand and guiding you as a child? We all experienced it, and you may find yourself still taking hold of a child’s hand now that you are older. I remember having no fear when my mom or dad held my hand and walked by my side. Nothing scary could touch me as long as that larger hand held my smaller one securely.

Guess what? Your Heavenly Father wants to do the same with you now. He is reaching out His hand and waiting for you to take hold. He is ready to guide us, walking alongside, and keeping us safe. He loves us infinitely more than our earthly parents, and is standing by waiting for us to turn to Him with our problems.

The verse speaks of taking hold of the right hand. There is a deeper meaning than the obvious one where our hand is being taken. The right hand symbolizes power, strength, and sovereignty. That is why Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father. It is a place of authority. Our God takes hold of our right hand. He is positioned to our right, in the place of authority.

It is also important to understand that the Israelites were exiled in Babylon at the time this was written. They needed reassurance and comfort in uncertain times. Knowing that God was in control as the authority and telling them not to fear was probably a great comfort to them. Though they did not have the same personal relationship with God as we do today, they were able to see a loving God who wanted to relieve their fears.

The best part of this verse? He chose to speak to them directly!

And He speaks to us today if we are listening. He is calling to us, reassuring us that He loves us and wants to take hold of our hand and guide us. He wants us to know He is in control and we have nothing to fear. Reach out for His hand. He’s there waiting for you.
