Devotion: Isaiah 11:9

November 22, 2024

Isaiah 11:9 They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

In school we learned that water covers approximately 71% of the earth’s surface. The majority of that water is in the oceans.  And even before man knew that fact, the ancient writings of the Old Testament spoke of the knowledge of the Lord in comparison to the waters of the sea. They understood this knowledge was expansive, something beyond comprehension, an undefined amount.

There are a few different interpretations of this verse, and whatever version you choose to believe in, the truth remains – the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord. How amazing is that thought? How exciting! We can only hope this comes to pass because we hear modern day stories of persecution and oppression of those who are trying to share our Lord with those who don’t yet know of Him or salvation.

Imagine what a difference we could make if we all obeyed the great commission, to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). Imagine the hope we would see if people everywhere believed and worshiped Him. Unfortunately, we won’t see that until He sits on the throne of the world. At that time peace will cover the earth. And that is where our hope lies, where we should be placing it.

Yesterday we said take heart for He has overcome and our hope is in eternity with Him. Today I encourage you to take heart for there will be a day when peace reigns on earth. Hope for that, friends. It is an amazing promise we can look forward to.
