Devotion: Isaiah 49:13

January 29, 2025

Isaiah 49:13 Shout for joy, you heavens; rejoice, you earth; burst into song, you mountains!

Today’s verse is all about joy and exultation! We see nature rejoicing and singing His praises in the beginning of the verse. The end of the verse is actually not included (I didn’t realize I had cut it short until it came time to actually write it up!). The second half of the verse gives us the reason for nature to be so full of praise. It continues with, “For the LORD comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.”

Reading this verse I am reminded of other places where we read about nature crying out, singing, etc. In Luke 19:40 Jesus tells the Pharisees that if His disciples were to keep quiet, the stones would cry out. We don’t need the stones crying out if we are silent! And in Habakkuk 2:11 we see the stones of the wall crying out and the beams of the woodwork echoing it – though in that case it was crying out about the injustices that had been done, not nature singing praises. Plus there are countless Psalms that mention nature praising God – too many to list! We also see more personification in Isaiah 55:12 when the prophet speaks of the mountains and hills bursting into song and the trees of the field clapping their hands.

I don’t want nature to do all of the praising as I sit by idly. I want to be a part of that choir of praise! How about you?
