Devotion: James 3:17

September 8, 2024

James 3:17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

In a world that lives for self, it is hard to see wisdom in the choices people make. We look around and see heartache, pain, sorrow, selfishness, and worse. It is not a world that glorifies its Maker.

As Christians we should be set apart, living a different life than those of the world. With His help, we can be that light we mentioned in yesterday’s devotion, a light shining bright in a world of darkness and despair (Matthew 5:16). We read in James 1:17 that every good gift, every perfect gift, is from the Father of lights and there is no shadow or darkness in Him. That is the light that should be shining forth from us – God IN us, shining brightly for all to see. The wisdom we receive from Him should guide our actions, letting that light and wisdom bring good fruit in our lives as we submit humbly to our Maker and obey His command to love others.

Instead of selfish pursuit of all things the world values, we should be seeking Him and trusting in Him to provide for ALL of our needs. Our lives become sacrifices, lives lived in pursuit of His holiness. The wisdom that moves us and spurs us to action is peace loving and considerate. We obey Jesus’s command to love God with our whole heart and to love others as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39). Godly wisdom demonstrates mercy to others since we know we will not receive mercy unless we are showing it for others (James. 2:13). And every action should be impartial and sincere.

That’s a tall order for someone to do on their own. But we must remember it is not US doing it. It is Christ in us. We follow His example and walk in love (Ephesians 5:2). We use His life as our model and the wisdom He gives us and we become His hands and feet on earth, serving Him by loving others.

Are you caught up in the pursuits of the world or are you allowing His pure and perfect wisdom to guide your steps? Ask Him to show you His will for your life and let His wisdom guide you.
