Devotion: James 4:6

February 26, 2025

James 4:6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

One of the biggest challenges in life is identifying pride and surrendering it to the Lord. We don’t like giving up the things we take pride in or that we feel we have earned. We try to justify our “right” to feeling the way we feel.

But we see today that God opposes the proud and shows favor to the humble. First, we need to define exactly what pride is and why it is such a bad thing for our faith, then we can discuss how we can surrender it.

Pride, as it is defined in the Bible, is arrogance and self-reliance that elevates our view of ourselves and our will above God’s will. It is a sinful attitude characterized by contempt for others and it is refusal on our part to submit to God’s authority. It is a form of rebellion against God that leads to our own destruction.

When we are caught up in our pride, we are rejecting God’s authority in our lives. We let pride come between us and God and are unable to receive His favor and blessings. Humility, on the other hand, allows us to draw closer to God

Once we identify the pride in our life and acknowledge that it is limiting our relationship with God, we must surrender it. We confess to God that pride has taken hold of us, and we ask Him to help us to focus our eyes on Him rather than on ourselves. We give our pride to Him and ask to be cleansed from the sins it has blemished our life with, and we trust He is faithful and forgiving and will answer our prayers with His grace and love.

Don’t let pride come between you and God. Confess your pride today, lay it at His feet, and feel His grace wash over you once more.
