James 4:6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
Reading back a little before getting into today’s verse we see that the writer is speaking to believers who were not acting properly. They were behaving in a manner that was self-centered, self-indulgent, and quarrelsome, not holy and righteous. Despite all of this worldly behavior, God still loved them, just as He continues to love us when we are enticed by the world. Grace increases instead of diminishing.
He rebuked these believers (James 4:4) and pointed out that they were rebelling against Gods with their actions. True believers cannot follow God yet still live the world (1John 2:15).
So, what can we do when we realize we are rebellious and are not living a righteous life? We humble ourselves and submit to Him once more. When we realize we have strayed from God, we come back humbly, repenting and turning back like the prodigal son did (Luke 15:21).
Today’s verse reminds us that grace abounds. It increases and overflows, washing us in His love. God might oppose the proud and the sinner, but He shows favor to the humble.
Every day is a new day, a fresh start. Repent of your sins and believe you have been given grace. Know in your heart you have been forgiven and choose to live a holy life full of righteousness.
