Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
This is such an inspiring verse for a personal calling by God. Not many of us can say we had this purpose in our lives, but Jeremiah can. God told him that before he was even formed in the womb, God already knew him. And long before he was born, God had already set him apart. God already knew what Jeremiah would do, who he would be, and the message he would carry.
But what about you and me? Can such verses also be used to encourage us? Even when it was spoken over another in proclamation of their calling as a prophet, can we still draw inspiration from it? I say wholeheartedly yes, we absolutely can.
The God who called Jeremiah also formed you. And you were intimately formed in the womb, too, with a future purpose all your own. We may not have fulfilled our purpose yet, or we may have additional purposes we need to accomplish, but the same truth applies. He formed you in the womb, in the hidden places deep within your mother, and He has a plan for you, a purpose. You have been set apart, whether or not you believe it, and God wants you to carry His message.
We are not going to debate predestination, instead drawing inspiration from the verse. Know that God wants to use you to proclaim His Name and He wants you to want to serve Him. You have a choice to seek Him out, to learn more about His greatness and power, and you choose who you speak with about what you have learned. Let it be a great message of hope and deliverance, of freedom from sin and the shackles of sin, guilt, and blame. Speak truth and share grace with those in need.
And let the Spirit work in you and through you to fulfill your purpose.
