Jeremiah 15:16 When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, Lord God Almighty.
I love the visual picture today’s verse creates in my mind. I ate His words. They were my joy and delight. I bear Your name. Praise God for all of this and more! The imagery is so beautiful and elicits a deeper response within us as we seek to understand and implement. Let’s break it down a bit to see what exactly is being said.
Jeremiah says, “I ate them” when referring to God’s Word. But how do we consume His words? We do this in a variety of ways – reading our Bible, memorizing the Scriptures, singing them in songs or hymns, studying what they mean, and meditating on them. We take His words, directly from His Word (the BIble) and we devour them, we consume them, we take them within us and let it nourish our souls.
And after eating, those words became his joy. They are our joy, too. When we are in the Word and are keeping it forefront in our mind and lives, we are filled with joy. We trust in His promises, we see Him working in our lives, and they truly do fill us with His joy. We DELIGHT in His Word, in the words of our Lord that guide us and help us know Him more.
Do you delight in His Word? Are you filled with joy after eating of His words? If not, pray that the Spirit would fill you with joy and delight as you seek Him in the Word.
