Jeremiah 7:23 …but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you.
It is a simple command. Obey me. Obey me and I will be your God and you will be my people.
So why is it so hard to walk in obedience sometimes?
The Bible is not some rule book that is designed to bring us down or to restrict us from living a fulfilling life. If anything, it gives us freedom. Following His commands helps guide our footsteps and allows us to live a life that is holy and set apart. True there are things we need to sacrifice in order to follow Him, but the blessings in our lives should be reason enough for us to be obedient. His guidelines, His Word, is meant to give us life, not hold us back.
And more than that, His Word is designed to protect us. There are consequences to every action, and when we engage in things that are not righteous we suffer. Not to mention, those things we engage in only bring temporary pleasure. And we don’t want to trade eternity for something fleeting.
We should WANT to be obedient. We should want that close, personal relationship with God. He tells us He will be our God and we will be His people. And He tells us that if we are obedient, it will go well with us. That should be motivating. It should be the reason we walk in obedience to Him.
The phrase “that it may go well with you” connects obedience directly to experiencing God’s goodness, peace, and protection. Obedience and Him being our God is conditional. If we walk in His ways, which are ultimately for our own benefit, He will bless us and provide for us in every way.
Don’t get caught up in the ways of the world and miss out on the blessings that come from being a child of God. Turn to Him and do as He instructs you to do.
Prayer: Lord, I want to be obedient and walk in Your ways. Help me to keep my eyes on You and do as You have called me to do. Amen
