Devotion: Jeremiah 9:24

Dec 16, 2025

Jeremiah 9:24 “…but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord.

I love how Jeremiah says “let the one who boasts boast about this” and then points us to God. We do not boast in our own efforts, but instead boast that we know the Lord. We boast that we have a deep, personal relationship with the Maker, the Creator, our Sustainer and Provider.

Instead of boasting in human wisdom, might, or riches, all of the earthly things that most people boast about, our  true fulfillment comes from knowing God. He blesses us with His steadfast love (hesed) and righteousness, and we come to Him and find delight in His character and actions. This should be the focus of all we do because it is our source of life and brings glory to Him. It contrasts temporary human achievements, all of the things the world cares about,  with the eternal significance of an intimate relationship with the Creator.

Our relationship is more than just a knowledge of God. It is a personal relationship with the God who made us, who formed us in the dark places (Psalm 139:15), and brought us life when we accepted Christ as our Savior. It is intimate and deep, far better than earthly relationships or pursuits.

He is a God “who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth.” It is comforting to know that our God loves us enough to show us kindness, while still bringing about justice and leading us to righteousness. Unlike the gods that pagans follow, our God is one of love and kindness. And that is what we boast about.

God delights in exercising these qualities of kindness, justice, and righteousness, as well as in the people who understand and reflect them. And then He finds joy in all of this and in those of us who exhibit the same qualities. The verse is a great reminder that we should reevaluate our priorities. Instead of seeking worldly things and the endless pursuit of obtaining more, we should enjoy a deep and personal relationship with God.

Stop chasing the things of the world. Instead chase the things of God. Seek Him and all He has to offer you in His kindness and love. It is far more fulfilling and satisfying than anything the world could ever offer.
