Devotion: Job 22:28

Job 22:28 What you decide on will be done, and light will shine on your ways.

When you think of scriptures that inspire you to be bold in your faith, Job is not typically where you turn to find them. But today’s verse shows us that all scripture is valuable and can bring us hope. Job’s story can be hard to read sometimes, and harder to understand. But it also has great truths in it that can help you walk in boldness and bravery.

First we need to establish who was speaking these words. We cannot just grab a verse from the Bible, pull it out of context, and assume we know what is going on. In this case the words were spoken by Eliphaz, a friend who came to mourn with Job over the losses and troubles he faced. Unfortunately, Job’s friends lecture him rather than coming alongside him in support. They all preach at him and say his woes are due to sin in his life. Eliphaz is certain that Job was at fault and continued to say so. His views on God are nothing like what we believe today. Eliphaz saw God as a Judge and punisher rather than the loving Father we know.

But despite his jaded views of God, Eliphaz did manage some truths. Truth that was mixed with false information and misunderstanding our God, but truth nonetheless.

Today’s verse shows us that words are powerful. Our thoughts shape our reality. That is why it’s so important to take thoughts captive and to meditate on His Word. We need to focus on God and His will, and then we will see results.

The end of the verse says light shining on your ways. But what does that mean? The light represents God at work in our lives. He guides us and directs our steps (Proverbs 3:5-6). Light is frequently used in the Bible to refer to God’s Presence. The second part of the verse shows us God is with us and guiding our way.

Knowing this, we should have confidence in our lives. We should be seeking His will for us, setting our minds to it, and choosing to live righteous and holy lives – so that His light shines down upon us. Be bold in your faith, friends, and bravely live for Him – and let His light shine on your ways.
