Devotion: John 1:17

Oct. 21, 2025

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Back on the 14th of the month we discussed John 1:16 where we looked at grace upon grace that was given. Today’s verse is a continuation of that thought, so review day 14 to refresh your memory and then let’s get into today’s devotion.

When we look at both verses together we see, “Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”

We see that Christ has brought us a new covenant. We are no longer under the Law and no longer required to do the endless sacrifices to atone for sins. Christ became the ultimate sacrifice to end all sacrifices. He gave Himself as the blood atonement required for the removal of sins (Romans 3:25). The Law was nailed to the cross with Jesus (Colossians 2:14) and is no more. Granted, that doesn’t mean there are not still good things in the Law and we still learn how we should live, but we are no longer held under that Law. We are now saved by grace through faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9).

I like the way Bibleref.com put it: “Instead of simply telling us we were broken, Christ gave us a way to fix what was wrong.” He gave Himself, in our place, and the cycle of sin was broken, nailed to the cross, done away with forever. Yes, we still sin, but we are no longer held in bondage by those sins. We have been freed from the penalty of eternal death and separation and are now heirs to the glory yet to come – eternity with Him!

Grace is an amazing gift and truly a blessing in our lives. Never forget what Jesus did for you and what it cost Him to do so.
