Devotion: John 11:25

December 8, 2024

John 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”

Today’s verse is the fifth of seven of Jesus’s famous “I am” statements in the book of John that give us a name that reveals more about His character. We see today that Jesus is the resurrection and the life. And praise God for both of these because where would we be if He wasn’t?

This statement was made to Martha after Jesus arrived in Bethany four days after Lazarus had died. This was the story where He raised Lazarus from the dead. Jesus makes this one I am statement that declares His power over death and the grave, and proved it by raising Lazarus. Can you imagine how powerful an experience this must have been? The Jewish people all knew the Scriptures and the followers of Jesus had heard Him make statements about resurrection prior to Him calling Lazarus to come forth from the tomb. The difference was those other statements were made referring to the final days, the end times when He would come to establish the New Jerusalem. In this case, His statement was so much more powerful because it was accompanied by immediate demonstration and action. Lazarus was raised from the dead!

And each of us will be raised again, too. Isn’t that an amazing thought? We will be with Him forevermore. Death is not the end. He has defeated the grave, conquered death, saved us all!

If you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and have not accepted Him as your Savior, today is the day to take action. Don’t be left behind. Be raised to eternity with Him along with the rest of the believers. But it starts with admitting you are a sinner and in need of a Savior. If you need help or have questions, let’s chat.
