Devotion: John 14:17

Aug 8, 2025

John 14:17 …the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

Before we begin with today’s devotion we need to stop and read the portion of the sentence that our verse continues from. We see in John that Jesus was talking to His disciples. This is what He said in John 14:16 – And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever

We see in v.6 that we would receive the Spirit, an advocate, Who would be with us forever. Not just for when we need Him, but always. For our whole lives. Forever.  And this leads into our verse for today.  It continues the thoughts from the previous verse, so we know we are talking about the Holy Spirit, not someone or something else.

It is sad that we are told the world cannot accept Him. These are all of the unbelievers in the world, the people who have rejected Him and His message. Their hearts are hard and they refuse to accept Him because they haven’t seen the evidence of Him in their lives.

For believers it is different – we know Him and He knows us. We have a relationship with God and we trust Him to help us. We see His Spirit working in our lives and we follow His ways. We not only see Him in our lives, but He lives within us. He helps us with discernment and guides us in our lives.

Today let’s take a few minutes to pray and show gratitude for the Spirit within us. Thank God for opening your eyes so that you could see the truth and be saved instead of following the ways of the world. And pray for those friends and family members who may yet be unsaved. Let them see Jesus in YOU so that they can believe, too, and be saved.
