John 14:27 Peace I leave you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
What greater peace is there than the one that only He can provide?
In this passage Jesus is preparing His disciples for what is to come – His leaving them and life after. No doubt this raised their anxiety levels considerably. I am sure it would have yours, too, had you been there with them. But he reassures them, telling them not to worry or be afraid because they would have the Holy Spirit.
He gives us peace, a peace that is like nothing we could ever experience on our own. The world can only give temporary, superficial peace, which fades away at the next big upset. The peace He gives is beyond our understanding and a long lasting peace that comes from the Spirit within us. It comes from a relationship with Him.
If you ask someone what peace is they would probably tell you free of conflict or trouble. This is not the peace we get from a relationship with Jesus. That peace is an inner stillness or quiet, regardless of the external troubles we may be experiencing. We can have inner peace while going through trying times because we know God has plans for us (Jeremiah 29:11) and is always with us (Psalms 73:23; Matthew 28:20).
If you don’t yet know Jesus or the peace He brings, today is the day you should change that, because there is no need to be afraid, no need to feel anxiety. His peace is there for you, waiting to be accepted.
