Devotion: John 6:29

June 11, 2025

John 6:29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

Though this verse does not say anything about faith itself in the wording we see, it is most assuredly about faith. Take a few minutes to read the verses leading up to and following this verse, just to make sure you are understanding what is taking place and the context from which the verse is drawn.  It may seem confusing, all of the talk of bread and the Bread of Life (Jesus). But it is all designed to help us grow in our faith and trust in Him more fully.

This verse is not telling us that we are earning our salvation or the Bread of Life through the works we do. Instead our “work” is to believe, to have faith in Him and His provision for us. His sacrifice has given us eternal life and it is by our faith that we are saved, not by our own merits.

Our faith changes our lives. It changes who we are, how we live, how we act and interact with others. It leads us to live a life that honors God and that gives Him all of the glory and praise. Our faith turns us away from sin and turns us to Him. And we love others as we grow in our faith and serve Him through serving others.

Believing in Him means that we open ourselves up to His will for our lives. We are more aware of His work in our lives and as we grow we trust Him all the more. He provides all of our needs, the sustenance for our souls. He truly is the Bread of Life, the bread we need to survive and to grow in our faith.  We may have to learn to give up control but we trust that He has a plan to prosper us and not to harm us. He wants only what is best for us.

Is He the Bread of Life in your world? Are you allowing Him control of your heart, mind, and soul? Turn to Him, trust Him, seek Him and His ways. You will never be disappointed in what He has for you.
