Devotion: John 6:35

December 29, 2024

John 6:35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

We already covered the Bread of Life a few days back and I did not notice it when selecting the verses for this month’s devotions and writing plan, so forgive me for the repeat. But it must be a message God wants us to repeat! So let’s see what MORE we can learn about the Bread of Life that we didn’t already cover previously.

Just days before Jesus declared Himself to be the Bread of Life, He fed the 5000 with five loaves of bread and two fish. He was the first prophet since the Old Testament to provide a miracle of provision. He met their physical need for sustenance while at the same time feeding their spiritual hunger through the words He spoke while teaching. We see that Jesus meets our physical needs as well as our spiritual needs and gives us

So why did Jesus use this comparison? Why did He call Himself the Bread of Life? Why not something else?

He used something they all knew – bread. They all knew of the story of Moses leading the people through the desert after they fled from Egypt and they knew of the manna that rained down from heaven each day. They knew their ancestors had been provided for physically through supernatural means. And He chose to show that He, too, was able to meet all of their needs through Him. Calling Himself the Bread of Life would have helped them associate the event of their ancestors who were satisfied and provided for daily with that which only He could offer us all – eternal satisfaction and provision.

We need to remember that He alone is the One who can satisfy our needs. He is the One who brings complete and total satisfaction. Seek Him today by studying His Word and praying. Fill Yourself with His goodness and grace. Feast on His promises and know that you will always be taken care of. Trust Him.
