Devotion: John 9:5

December 12, 2024

John 9:5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

Today’s verse is the second of seven “I AM” statements made in the book of John. These statements are ONLY recorded in the book of John and are not found in the other gospels. Jesus first made this claim in John 8:12 – “I am the Light of the world.”

The purpose of a light is to see, to illuminate and guide us. We have lighthouses to act as beacons in the night to guide ships from disaster. We have flashlights that we use to illuminate our path and help us see in the darkness so we do not stumble. We have lamps to light up the insides of our homes and help us to see better. When it is dark, we are lost, unable to confidently move about. We stumble, trip, fall, hurt ourselves by running into things… We struggle.

If light does that for us in our physical worlds, imagine what the Light can do for our spiritual life! Jesus IS the Light. He is the ultimate guide, the saving grace, the light in the darkness. Without the light, darkness overtakes everything but through Christ we have a conqueror. We have a savior. We have our way.

And His light shines in each of us. We become the light, as He is the light in each of us. When we are filled with Him, we shine bright for all to see. We radiate Him and His awesome power and mighty grace and mercy. And it repels the darkness. It drives it back. It stops the darkness from taking over and causing struggle.

Are YOU filled with His light? Let Him shine through you and touch the dark world with His saving light.
