Devotion: Jonah 2:9

Nov. 9 2025

Jonah 2:9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord .’

Jonah is another book of the Bible that we rarely get to study from, so I found it interesting that it fit into the theme for the month, so I figured why not try it and see what we can learn?

Jonah shows us his grateful heart in this verse. He was not obedient to God’s calling for him initially and he suffered the consequences for his disobedience. But he realized that God is One who saves and he recognized that his salvation came from God alone.  And when he realized that, he was grateful.

He speaks of shouting grateful praise to the Lord, as well as to offer sacrifices. Through this verse we see how much Jonah changed and had turned back to the Lord. He recognized that salvation comes from God alone and not from any of his own efforts. Jonah also realized that he had received God’s mercy even in his punishment and he moved from rebellion to repentance.

If you have turned from your faith, now is the time to turn back. If you are living a life that is not fully pleasing to Him, today is the day to make changes. Jonah was disobedient but God still saved him. And Jonah was grateful for this, just as we should be thankful to God for saving us. We did nothing on our own to obtain salvation. It is by faith we are saved (Ephesians 2:8-9).
