Devotion: Joshua 1:9

July 26, 2024

Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

When discouraged or full of fear, what do you do? Do you wallow in the emotions? Do you complain to someone about what you are experiencing? Do you pray and praise God? There are many ways we can respond, but most of us do not turn to God when fear and discouragement grip us.

Upon the death of Moses, the people of Israel were instructed to prepare to enter the Promised Land. Joshua was given the words of encouragement from the Lord, reminding the people that God was with them and would never leave them or forsake them. After years of wandering the desert it was finally time to enter the lands promised to their ancestors. It was probably a little scary for them. They had been wandering for forty years. Yet now they were being told to prepare to step into their destinies where they would have to fight before taking the land for themselves. It had to be scary for them. How could it not be?

You might be facing uncertainty in your life. You might be struggling with a decision that weighs heavily on you or feeling fearful or discouraged. But don’t fret. Do not let fear overwhelm you because God is with you always (Matthew 28:20; Zephaniah 3:17; Psalms 46:11). No matter where the path leads, He is with you, your strength in times of need.

Today focus on being courageous. Trust in Him to guide you in whatever you may be facing. He is waiting to guide you. His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9) so do not be afraid.

Prayer: Lord, Help me to be strong and courageous today instead of fearful or discouraged. Amen
