Devotion: Luke 1:46-47

April 12, 2025

Luke 1:46-47 And Mary said, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…”

I have always been inspired by the response Mary had when the angel told her she would bear the Savior of our world. She did not freak out or whine, she didn’t question what would happen or ask why she would have to go through the scandal of an unwed pregnancy. She simply responded with grace. She responded with praise.

Mary’s song is truly remarkable. Not only does it show the beauty of her soul, it also shows great faith and a deep understanding of the Scriptures, which is unusual for women at that time. Her faith in God’s plan for her life expresses joy and reverence while also demonstrating gratitude at being chosen for such an important task. I don’t think I could have responded in the same way she did, which is why I say it is so inspiring. I pray for a faith as strong as Mary’s but am definitely nowhere near her level of acceptance and awareness.

Her faith is an example of how we should respond to God’s call in our own lives. He has a plan for us and He has called each one of us to perform specific tasks for His glory. He has blessed us with talents and skills that we are called to use in our own world. Just as Mary was called to carry and care for the Savior of our world, He has determined something important for your life, too. What that is I cannot say, but you will know when you receive the call.

Wherever He has called you to go, whatever He has called you to do, let your soul glorify Him and your spirit rejoice. He has chosen you and our response should be humble obedience and joyful gratitude.
