Devotion: Luke 12:22

August 19, 2024

Luke 12:22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or about your body, what you will wear.”

When you have little money and are not sure how to provide for your basic needs, it can be difficult not to worry about things you do not have. Wondering where your next meal will come from or how to put shoes on your feet that won’t fall apart… It can all be very stressful!

But it shouldn’t be. Hard as that is to believe, worrying about things in your life should not cause you distress. Jesus told His disciples not to worry about these things, so why do we? Imagine what their lives must have been like, moving around from area to area with only what they were wearing. He would send a few into towns to arrange for food. He even performed miracles to provide food for those who had come to hear Him teach (feeding the 5000 in Mark 6:44, Luke 9:14, Matthew 14:21, Mark 8:19).

God always provides, even when we do not see how He will make a way. Why are we so untrusting? Why is our faith so weak that we let worry and fear become crippling anxiety? He is faithful and He has a plan. Why is it that we only recognize His plan and provision after the fact? We should trust Him from the start.

If you struggle with worry and anxiety, today is the perfect time to start making changes in your thinking. Replace worry and negativity with the promises of God. Recognize all the times He provided for you in the past and carried you through the storms. Recognize His faithfulness and trust Him to be your steadfast support.
