Devotion: Luke 12:6-7

July 9, 2024

Luke 12:6-7 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Worrying about tomorrow is almost like a major league event for me. I try to give my fears and anxieties to Him, but I admit I struggle. It is for that reason that I try to memorize verses like this to meditate on when the fears start creeping up on me.

I take comfort in knowing that every hair on my head is numbered, and He knows them all. He knows what I need and has a plan that is far greater than any I could devise on my own ( Jeremiah 29:11).

Let’s step back a bit. The “hairs on my head” statement lies sandwiched between statements about sparrows. Why are we learning about birds? Because God had an important point to make for us. God created everything, which includes creatures like the sparrows. Even when they were being sold for sacrificial offerings, He remembered them, both in life and in death. Sparrows were the cheapest offering available in the market. They were used by the poor as a substitute for pigeons and turtledoves (Leviticus 1:14).

And then we have the promise – do not fear because God provides for all our needs, because we are worth far more than the sparrows. He knows us more so than the birds.  If He can know insignificant birds like sparrows, how much more is the relationship He has with us? We have nothing to fear!

So why do I worry? I shouldn’t fear anything because God will know me the way He knows the sparrows. I just have to let go of it and focus on Him.
