Devotion: Luke 19:40

April 19, 2025

Luke 19:40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

This is one of those verses that makes me want to step up and praise God with all I have. It is a testament to the worship that Jesus deserves and a reminder that not only does He deserve our heartfelt praise, but if we fail to give it He will still be worshipped.

At this point in the story, Jesus is making His way into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Everyone is singing His praise and waving palms while He makes His triumphant entry. The Pharisees are trying to convince Him to silence the crowds lest the Romans get involved. And today’s verse is the response Jesus has to their pleas. He informs them that even if the people are quiet the stones will still cry out in worship.

How amazing is that? If the people are silenced, nature will still proclaim His goodness. Nothing can silence the praise He is due. This is not the first or only time we see nature worshipping Him. The psalms include various instances where nature sang its praise for Him (Psalm 96:11-12). Whether it is an audible testimony or a physical monument like the heroes of old erected to testify to God’s greatness is not known (Joshua 4:1-8). But regardless, the praises will remain.

Whether hyperbole for the sake of making a point or truth of what might happen, the fact remains. Jesus deserves all our worship and we should not allow anyone or anything to silence our praises. If we are silenced, even the most inanimate objects will still testify to His greatness.

Don’t be like the Pharisees. Do not be silent. Praise His holy name with all you have. Do not let nature eclipse your worship with its own. Raise your voices in humble adoration and sing His praises forever.
