Devotion: Mark 5:36

July 13, 2024

Mark 5:36 Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

Most of us cannot relate to this verse, because either we are not yet parents or we have never experienced the loss of a child. While this verse is about Jesus’s response to hearing Jairus’s daughter had died, it has hope for everyone. This story has an amazing spiritual lesson for all of us, regardless of age.

Let’s quickly review the story. Jairus, ruler of the synagogue, seeks help for his sick daughter. But Jesus dallies along the way because of the bleeding woman who touched the hem of his garment. In the meantime, the daughter dies.

Keep in mind the opposition Jesus faced from the ruling leaders. Jairus was ruler of the synagogue. He shouldn’t have gone to Jesus for help, but he did! He had faith in Jesus to heal his daughter. But would that faith continue once he is told his daughter had died?

Do not fear. Believe. Such simple instructions yet such a challenge to do when facing  impossible odds. Jairus had his faith tested to the extreme! Could he trust in Jesus to do the impossible and resurrect his daughter? He must have had extreme faith, indeed, because his daughter was brought back to life.

What about you? If you are facing an obstacle that feels as monumental as death itself, can you believe with the same faith as Jairus? Let Him resurrect what you have lost – whether a job, a dream, sobriety, relationships…. He is there telling you hold on to your faith, child, and trust Him to do His will. Do not be afraid.

Just believe.
