Devotion: Matthew 6:34

July 20, 2024

Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

It is easy to let the worries of the future weigh us down. It is a natural human tendency to fall into patterns of worry and anxiety when we face an uncertain future. If you are anything like me, worrying about tomorrow is not only a natural occurrence, but is actually the default response. And it drives me crazy because I don’t want to be like that. I want to trust God to meet all my needs, not question the 500 different ways it might turn out.

If you know me or have read anything I have written before, you have heard me say Jeremiah 29:11 is my life verse. It is the hope that carries me through life, especially when there are big decisions to make. But Matthew 6:34 has also been important for me . It is that reminder that I have no trust when I stress myself out over possible scenarios I create in my head.

Tomorrow has enough worries of its own without me adding more. It does no good to stress about what tomorrow might look like. God is faithful. He always provides. So why should we worry? His ways are far better than our own. What we need to do is trust God and the only way to do that is by knowing Him and His Word. Hide His Word in your heart (Psalm 119:11). When we can bring to mind scripture, we can combat the spirits of worry and anxiety.

Are you worrying about tomorrow or are you putting it in His more than capable hands?
