Micah 4:4 Everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid, for the Lord Almighty has spoken.
Micah is not a long read – just seven chapters with sixteen or less verses each. It is made up of various prophecies that alternate between warnings of destruction and promises of restoration. Because it is a book of prophecies you might think we can’t draw applicable inspiration from it, since the writing was done for the southern kingdom of Jerusalem in the late eighth century BC.
That may be true and today’s devotion is a stretch. Or we might still learn something new as we explore it further.
Micah paints a vivid mental picture with his word choice. His imagery gives us the impression of a serene, peaceful existence where fear has no place. One would sit under a tree or vine to read, pray, meditate, socialize, or simply relax. This would have been very encouraging for the original audience since the time in which it was written could not be described as peaceful. It would have provided them with hope for the future, giving them something to look forward to.
But it can also give us hope today. Knowing how God provides an escape for us in tumultuous times is encouraging. Knowing the prophecies He gave His servants in the past were fulfilled shows us He is a faithful God. Because He is faithful, we can trust Him to give us peace, too. And even if we don’t see His provision now, we can have hope that He will still provide for our futures because we have seen it in the past.
Today let’s stop worrying about the tough times we may be facing and look forward to the peace under the trees.
