Philippians 1:18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice.
Have you ever noticed in this verse that Paul mentioned Christ being preached from different motives? I believe this is the first time I noticed this verse. Apparently you can share Jesus with people from wrong motives, since that is what was happening at the time he wrote this epistle. He pointed out that some people were preaching Christ with ulterior motives while others did so genuinely. And regardless of the reason they were preaching, Paul found reason to rejoice – Christ was being preached.
I love the fact that Paul had a “Who cares” attitude towards those who were preaching. His joy was found in the fact that Christ was being preached, whatever the motives. As long as Christ was being proclaimed it did not matter what motives spurred it on. The important thing was that the gospel was being shared and people were being saved.
We are called to make disciples of all people. As believers, it is our responsibility to share the gospel with others. We do not do this to spite someone or to earn our way to heaven. We share because it is what we are supposed to do and we should want everyone to hear the good news of Christ. We should be overflowing with joy and excitement at what Jesus has done in our own lives.
But even if our heart is not filled with joy while we share, we still need to be sharing. Whatever our heart posture, Jesus should be proclaimed. We know that God will use us to plant seeds and will send others to water and harvest. But we must be obedient to the call.
Who can you share Jesus with today?
