Devotion: Philippians 1:20

March 20, 2025

Philippians 1:20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.

This epistle was written by the Apostle Paul while he was in prison. It is amazing to think of how encouraging he is in this letter, considering the circumstances in which he finds himself. Most people wouldn’t be sending letters of encouragement and joy if they were in his shoes. Yet that is exactly what he shares with the church at Philippi.

And knowing that he was writing from prison you would not expect him to be talking about courage. But he shares with us a message of courage and hope. His words show a confidence in his future, though it may still be uncertain. His confidence is in Christ being exalted regardless of the outcome – whether it be life or death. I know I would not face the possibility of death with such joy and courage as Paul, but that is what we see in the words he shares.

Paul’s desire in whatever was to come was to honor and glorify God. He demonstrated courage and confidence through his obedience – either to continue in ministry as he had done thus far or through his own death. No matter the outcome, Christ would be glorified and exalted.

Do you have the same courage Paul demonstrates here? Is your faith so secure that you would be fine with either a life or death outcome? I admit that I do not know if my faith is that strong. No matter how much I try to do His will and live for Him, I am weak and don’t think I could have the same confidence that Paul has. My courage is simply not strong enough. I long to be a faithful servant, but I know my own weaknesses. What about you?
