Philippians 2:10 …that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth…
In reading today’s verse you might be wondering what name we are studying. Today it is the name above all names, Jesus.
Let’s start with a little word study. The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew root meaning “ the Lord is salvation.” In translated Hebrew we get the form Yeshua. The transliteration from Hebrew to Greek gives us lesous, which evolved to Lesus, and then Jesus. The linguist change from Yeshua to Jesus sounds completely different, but the meaning has remained the same, just as our God remains unchanged and eternal.
Now we can explore today’s verse. The name of Jesus is powerful and every creature should bow down in worship. We have a choice to bow down now, to worship Him in all His glory and testify that He is King. But consider the times the Bible showed us people who saw God. Their response. They fell before Him and said they were not worthy to be before Him. Their falling to their knees was a natural response, not a choice to be made.
And WHO is going to bow? Everyone and everything in heaven and on earth. But what is meant by under the earth? There are a few different possible interpretations of that. One is that this refers to all who have previously died and have not yet been resurrected. Another refers to demonic presences and Satan. Since this is referring to every creature, it is likely talking about the demonic forces of darkness. We know that even the demons recognize His authority and power.
Regardless of the interpretation, EVERYTHING will bow before the Lord in the final days. For me, I CHOOSE to bow before the Lord myself. How about you?
