Devotion: Philippians 2:13

Sept. 21, 2025

Philippians 2:13 …for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

This month we have talked a lot about seeking God and His purpose as we strive to discover our own purpose for being here. Today’s verse shows us that it is God who fills us with the desire to serve and experience that purpose.

It is God who works within us. He has given us the Spirit to be our Helper, our Comfort, and our guiding Light as we step out in faith to do His will. Through the Spirit we are given the desire, or the will, and the power, or the doing part of the verse, that allows us to act according to His purpose. We do not do it alone. We do it through the Spirit. We have Divine assistance to guide us in our walk, to grow spiritually and to align our wills with His.

God is active in our lives. He does not sit by watching idly as an observer. He takes a role in our lives, in our development and spiritual growth, and fulfills both His purpose as well as helps us with our own. He places desire and intention in our hearts and then with the help of the Spirit we are able to act.

Through this desire and action, His will is accomplished. His purpose is fulfilled. We become imitators of God (Ephesians 5:1) and do His work in our world. We see seeds planted, hearts touched, and lives changed. We see souls saved and the Kingdom expanded. We see God glorified and praise His Name.

We stand in awe of the work God is doing in us and through us when we are obedient to His call for our lives. We respond with obedience because we love Him and have seen the grace He bestows within our lives. We see Him align our hearts with His own and we pour out His grace upon others in response.

Are you allowing Him to work in you? Are you being the conduit of His grace, sharing it with others? He has a purpose for all He does and you are instrumental in that process when you allow Him to use you to do His will.
