Proverbs 12:20 Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil, but those who promote peace have joy.
The book of Proverbs has always been a favorite of mine. There is so much wisdom contained in that book and so much we can learn from reading it. And each proverb is short and to the point. It leaves no room for confusion or misinterpretation. Today’s verse is just one proverb on the subject of peace and joy.
In this proverb we see two types of people – one who is deceitful and plotting evil (or as other versions say, imagining evil) and the other is promoting peace because they are filled with joy.
Our hearts are naturally not good. That is the curse of sin. Jeremiah 17:9 tells us the heart is deceitful and desperately wicked.
But we also see people like David who we already said previously was a man after God’s heart. He still sinned and made mistakes, but he wanted to live a godly life and sought God and repented when he realized he had done wrong.
Joy is a natural response to things going well, to life giving us what we need. But when we face trials or are in a season of waiting, joy is not a natural response. It is a choice as we seek to exercise hope and wait on God.
