Proverbs 17:9 Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
Yesterday we learned what it means when the scriptures say love covers a multitude of sins. Today we see another example of love covering offenses. And there are many other times the scriptures speak of it, not just in these two instances. It is obviously an important concept that we should consider and implement in our own lives.
The book of Proverbs is full of reminders to love others and forgive faults. Love helps us build strong, long lasting relationships with others. It is the foundation of all of our friendships. The New Testament also has numerous verses that encourage us to love others. We are to love and forgive others of their offenses. Relationships are restored and strengthened when we can forgive others and continue to love them.
The New Living Translation (NLT) says it like this – Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends. (Proverbs 17:9 NLT)
When we have problems with our friends and family we need to take steps to fix them quickly. Matthew 18:15-17, which we mentioned yesterday, can help you restore those relationships. Do not dwell on whatever is interfering with your fellowship, but go to your friends and talk to them. Work through the problems and be united once more in love. A Christian should love at all times, as Christ has loved us. The enemy wants nothing more than to separate us and cause division. Don’t give him a foothold!
Remember, forgiveness is a choice. We give grace and mercy to the offender, drawing close to them with a love that reflects Christ, not self. Choose love today. Forgive those who have hurt you and embrace them as friends once more.
