Devotion: Proverbs 18:10

December 6, 2024

Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.

Back to the Old Testament we go today, where we see the name of the Lord is a fortified tower. But what exactly is a strong tower or fort tower and how does this describe God?

A strong tower or fortified tower (depending upon what translation you are reading) is a building, typically elevated (hence the name tower) that provides a safe refuge in times of danger.  When something is fortified it means it is designed to be defensive protection against attack, thoroughly strengthened and secured.

In Biblical terms, a strong tower or fortified tower is a metaphor that represents Protection, or a place one could run to for safety in times of trouble or attack. We see this demonstrated in Judges 9:51, when all of the people fled to the tower for protection and shut themselves in. Once inside, the people would all move to the upper heights where it was safest.

How fitting is it then that we can call God our fortified tower? Such vivid imagery! God is our strength. He is our protector. He is our fortified tower that we can run to in times of trouble, the shelter we can seek when attacks rain down upon us. We can call on His Name and find refuge in His embrace, protected and shielded from danger.

Is He YOUR fortified tower? Run to Him. He stands strong and unmoving, and You can find refuge within His arms.
