Devotion: Proverbs 28:1

March 13, 2025

Proverbs 28:1 The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.

What is a righteous person? Are YOU a righteous person? What makes someone righteous? These are just a few questions that popped into my mind after reading this proverb.

A righteous person is someone who listens to God and obeys His commands. He does the will of God instead of His own. They do what is right, what is just, and what is good in His sight. That does not mean a righteous person is sinless. None of us are sinless. We all struggle with sin in our lives.

There are a few things that a righteous person does. We already said that a righteous person is obedient to God’s Word. They also have a desire to glorify our God. They are a prayer warrior. Sometimes our prayers take years before seeing answers, but the righteous person continues to persevere in prayer. And a righteous person serves others. They don’t think of themselves, but love their neighbors and communities and offer up service to them.

The wicked run away without anyone chasing them. They have fear in their lives and it eclipses all they do. They run away, looking over their shoulder fearing they will be caught. They worry about the wrongs they have done and have great guilt.

But the righteous are firm in their foundation of faith. They are filled with confidence (2 Corinthians 3:4). It is a confidence not in themselves, but in God (2 Corinthians 10:17). And with that confidence they are bold. They are secure. They are not running away but are standing strong with the strength of Christ.

So again I ask. Are YOU a righteous person? If you don’t feel you are, turn to Him. Dig into His Word. Seek other believers who will strengthen you. Let prayer be a habit, not a second thought. And serve others. Be the believer that boldly trusts and shares Jesus in both words and actions.
