Devotion: Proverbs 3:24

July 19, 2024

Proverbs 3:24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

If you have ever watched a baby sleep, you know there is nothing more peaceful. As we get older, though, we begin to worry about things in our lives. We begin to have anxiety about what is going on around us or fear what could happen. Our sleep does not come as easily or is interrupted by worry.

I love the New Living Translation of this verse: “You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly.”

I don’t know about you, but sleep is one of my favorite things to do. There is nothing better than a solid night of sleep to put me in a good mood the next day. After good sleep I am more productive than on days where my sleep wasn’t restful.

If you want good sleep you need to learn to learn how to silence the noise in your head. You might have heard the verse “… and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). Taking thoughts captive means not letting your mind run wild. The mind is a powerful tool that you can use to alter mood. If you can stop it from dwelling on bad things that cause worry and anxiety, you will feel better and get more rest. Only you have the power and it requires you to stop thinking the wrong things and focus instead on Him.

Sweet sleep is calling to you. Will you answer? Give those fears, anxieties, stresses, and negative thoughts to God and enjoy your sleep, sweet and restful , free from fear.
