Proverbs 2:6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
While we might assume wisdom is something we can obtain on our own, that is only partially true. Yes, we can obtain earthly or worldly wisdom based upon experiences and knowledge, but it is not the same as the wisdom from God. Godly wisdom, that which we have been learning about each day through this month’s devotions, cannot be achieved or attained by our own efforts. It comes directly from God.
How might we get Godly wisdom?
First and foremost we need to be seeking God and His will for our lives. This is done in a number of ways, primarily through His Word. We need to understand that the wisdom of God comes from one source – Him. This verse tells us that it comes from His mouth. And He speaks through His Word. If we are not in the Word, how will we know what He says?
Through prayer we can ask God for wisdom (James 1:5-6). We seek His gift of wisdom by asking Him for help in our lives. We ask Him to guide our steps and direct our paths (Psalms 119:133). We trust Him to guide us and to prepare the way. We know He makes the way of the righteous smooth (Isaiah 26:7).
We can also hear from God through fellowship with others, praise and worship, and reading resources such as this devotion (and other devotions) and books. But we should always remember that we need to be in the Word first because it is inspired and His, not imperfect or open to misinterpretation like the others, which come from imperfect, fallible humans.
Are you seeking Godly wisdom through other means? How do you obtain wisdom?
