Devotion: Psalm 118:21

Nov. 4, 2025

Psalm 118:21 I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation.

This is a beautiful verse that we can memorize and use in our daily prayers of thanksgiving. Without Him and His redeeming sacrifice, none of us would have any hope. It is thanks to Jesus and the work He did on the cross that we have been saved and that is always cause for thanks and praise. Psalm 118 is a hymn of thanksgiving and praise and is worth pausing now to read in its entirety.

The psalmist shows us through this verse that God is always there, always listening. He hears our cries for deliverance and He wants what is best for us. He wants us to have a relationship with Him and because of that He is always ready to give us good things.

The psalmist also shows us his heart of faith. He talks to God regularly. We know this because he speaks of giving thanks because God always answers. Sometimes we don’t like the answers we get, but He is faithful to answer them all.

We should use this verse as an example of faith and thankful praying and should model our own using it. The psalmist models intentional prayer – his purpose for composing it being the salvation that has come through the Lord. It is deeply personal, which is how our own prayers should be. We need to speak from the heart when we turn to God in prayer, not out of obligation or ritual, but in thanksgiving.

An interesting side note – the use of salvation in this verse can be seen as more than deliverance from enemies or hardship. It also represents restoration. We turn to God for restoration and reconciliation. And He is faithful to respond!
